Marine Communication Tool ("the app") is published by M. Faed, trading as Marine Tools (marinetools.au). This policy explains what information the app handles. In short: the app does not collect, transmit, or share your personal data. It has no advertising, analytics, tracking, user accounts, or cloud storage.
We do not receive any information from your device. The app does not send usage data, device identifiers, location, or the NMEA data you view to us or to any third party. The app contains no advertising or analytics code.
Settings and connection history. Your preferences and recent connection details (for example TCP/UDP addresses and ports, serial settings, and the recording folder you chose) are stored in the app's private storage on your device. They are not sent to us. If you use Android's backup feature, these settings may be included in your own Google backup, which is controlled by your Google account and Google's privacy policy.
NMEA, AIS and NMEA 2000 data. Data from your USB, network, file or CAN sources is decoded and displayed on your device only. If you choose to record data, the file is saved to the folder you select. If you enable echo or network output, data is sent only to the serial port or network destination you configure.
Location. The app can ask for precise and approximate location permission. It uses your phone's location only while the app is in use, to show your own position, calculate range and bearing to AIS targets, and to provide the optional Phone GNSS data source. Location is processed on your device through Android and Google Play Services location APIs. It is not stored by the app beyond the current session and is not sent to us. The app does not use location in the background. You can decline or revoke the permission in Android settings and still use the other features.
Camera (torch). The app uses the camera flash only to switch the torch on and off. It does not take photos or record video.
USB devices. The app communicates with USB serial and CAN adapters you connect, after you grant Android's USB permission for that device.
Crash reports. If the app crashes, it saves a crash report on your device with the app version, device model, Android version, the app's connection state, recent connection events, and technical error details. Reports are never sent automatically. They are shared only if you tap "Share Crash Log" and choose where to send them (for example, by email to support).
The app uses network permissions to connect to the NMEA data sources you configure on your local network or the internet (TCP, UDP, multicast). It does not contact our servers. Links in the app (for example to our website or product listings on Amazon) open in your browser, and those sites have their own privacy policies.
The app uses Google Play Services Location to obtain your device's location on your device. Google's handling of location data is described in the Google Privacy Policy. The app also uses open source libraries (usb-serial-for-android, ZXing, Gson, and the Android/Jetpack libraries) that run entirely on your device and do not transmit data.
We do not sell, rent, or share personal data, because we do not collect any.
The app is a marine navigation data tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Because data stays on your device, you control it. You can clear the app's data or uninstall the app in Android settings to delete stored settings and crash reports, delete any recording files you saved, and revoke location, camera, or USB permissions at any time in Android settings.
If the app's data practices change, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above.
